Woman killed, son hurt in Blvd. crash

A 44-year-old woman was killed and her 4-year-old son injured Monday when they were struck by a car that jumped a curb along Roosevelt Boulevard.

The accident occurred at about 2:44 p.m. on the southbound side of the Boulevard near Strahle Street, said Officer Jillian Russell, a Philadelphia police spokeswoman.

A 1998 Toyota Camry was traveling in the southbound outer lanes when the operator swerved the car to avoid a moving van and lost control. The Toyota jumped the curb and struck the two pedestrians, who were on the sidewalk.

The woman suffered traumatic injuries to her head and torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, treated and listed in stable condition.

Police did not release the names of either victim. As a policy, the department’s media relations office does not release the names of accident victims without their family’s consent.

The operator of the Toyota remained at the scene until authorities arrived, but the van and its operator did not. No criminal charges have been filed. The case remains under investigation. ••
